Kergin approximation in Banach spaces

We explore the convergence of Kergin interpolation polynomials of holomorphic functions in Banach spaces, which need not be of bounded type. We also investigate a case where the Kergin series diverges. Kergin interpolation is a generalization of both Lagrange interpolation in the one dimensional case, and the Taylor polynomial in the case where all interpolation points coincide. In several vari...

Diophantine Approximation in Banach Spaces

In this paper, we extend the theory of simultaneous Diophantine approximation to infinite dimensions. Moreover, we discuss Dirichlet-type theorems in a very general framework and define what it means for such a theorem to be optimal. We show that optimality is implied by but does not imply the existence of badly approximable points.

Simultaneous greedy approximation in Banach spaces

We study nonlinear m-term approximation with regard to a redundant dictionary D in a Banach space. It is known that in the case of Hilbert space H the pure greedy algorithm (or, more generally, the weak greedy algorithm) provides for each f ∈ H and any dictionaryD an expansion into a series f = ∞ ∑ j=1 cj (f ) j (f ), j (f ) ∈ D, j = 1, 2, . . . with the Parseval property: ‖f ‖2 = ∑j |cj (f )|2...

Weakly Compact Approximation in Banach Spaces

The Banach space E has the weakly compact approximation property (W.A.P. for short) if there is a constant C < ∞ so that for any weakly compact set D ⊂ E and ε > 0 there is a weakly compact operator V : E → E satisfying supx∈D ‖x − V x‖ < ε and ‖V ‖ ≤ C. We give several examples of Banach spaces both with and without this approximation property. Our main results demonstrate that the James-type ...

Simultaneous Approximation in Scales of Banach Spaces

The problem of verifying optimal approximation simultaneously in different norms in a Banach scale is reduced to verification of optimal approximation in the highest order norm. The basic tool used is the Banach space interpolation method developed by Lions and Peetre. Applications are given to several problems arising in the theory of finite element methods.
